The Pattern You've Never Noticed

I was sitting at my kitchen table at 11pm on a Tuesday, staring at a spreadsheet that was supposed to organize my life, when it hit me. Not like a lightning bolt. More like realizing the song stuck in your head has been playing on the radio for the past ten minutes.

Every single entity I manage — myself, my family, my company, even the sports club I coach on weekends — they all need the same things. Not similar things. The same things.

The Discovery

Think about it. You, as a person, need to manage your finances. Your family needs to manage finances. Your business needs to manage finances. The nonprofit you volunteer for? Finances. The book club? Yes, even the book club has finances, even if it is just splitting the cost of wine.

Now replace “finances” with “communication.” Or “legal.” Or “health and safety.” Or “planning.”

It is always the same 13 functional domains, arranged in the same four pillars. Every single time.

The Four Pillars

Structure — the foundation. Identity, Governance, Finance, Legal. Who are we, how do we decide things, what do we have, what are the rules? Whether you are a solo freelancer or a 500-person company, you need these four figured out. The difference is only scale.

Navigate — the compass. Planning, Communication, Monitoring. Where are we going, how do we talk about it, and how do we know if we are on track? A family planning a vacation and a startup planning a product launch are doing the exact same cognitive work. They just do not realize it.

Act — the engine. Operations, Resources, Human Capital, Technology. The stuff that actually gets done. How you run things, what tools you use, who does the work, and what systems support it. This is where most people spend all their time — and it is only one of four pillars.

Build — the growth layer. Development, Risk Management. How do you get better, and how do you not get destroyed in the process? The domains most people skip entirely until it is too late.

Why You Never Noticed

Here is the thing that kept me up that night: we never notice the pattern because we use different words for the same domain depending on the entity.

When it is personal, we call it “budgeting.” When it is a business, we call it “financial management.” When it is a family, we call it “keeping track of money.” Three different words, one domain.

We call it “self-improvement” for ourselves, “training and development” for employees, and “growth” for the business. Same domain. Different costume.

The vocabulary changes, the domain does not.

Decide Once. Repeat Forever.

This is the part that changed everything for me. Once you see the pattern, you only need to learn how to manage each domain once. The principles transfer across every entity in your life.

You do not need a separate system for personal planning, family planning, and business planning. You need one approach to the Planning domain, applied three times.

You do not need different communication strategies for every group you belong to. You need one understanding of the Communication domain, adapted to context.

That night at the kitchen table, I stopped trying to build separate systems for every part of my life. I started building one pattern that works everywhere.

That pattern became SNAB.

And the weird part? Once you see it, you cannot unsee it. Every entity, every organization, every group of humans trying to get something done together — they are all running the same 13 domains. Some well, most poorly, all unknowingly.

The first step is just noticing.
